The S&P/TSX Composite Index rose 0.4% to close at 35,649 on Tuesday, nearing a one-year high as the recent global bond sell-off eased. Yields retreated from multi-year highs, offering some respite to credit-sensitive markets. RBC gained 0.6%, TD Bank added 0.5%, BMO rose 0.7% and CIBC advanced 0.9%. Utilities also gained as lower yields increased the appeal of high-dividend-paying stocks. Miners advanced as gold prices rebounded, with Agnico Eagle up 1.2% and Barrick adding 1.6%. The tech sector rose, tracking gains on Wall Street, with Shopify up 2.4%. Meanwhile, Emera (-2.9%) said it would acquire Canadian Utilities (-1.9%) in a deal that would create one of Canada’s largest power providers. ATCO (+9.2%), which holds nearly 37% of Canadian Utilities’ outstanding non-voting shares and all outstanding voting shares, said it would separate into a publicly traded industrial services company.

TSX Nears One-Year High as Yields Retreat

The Ibovespa fell 0.5% to close at 205,835 on Tuesday after hitting a record 206,912 in the previous session, when Flávio Bolsonaro finished ahead in Sunday’s first election round, defying most polls. The index was weighed by Petrobras (-2.8%) and Vale (-1.4%). Petrobras fell as the oil rally lost steam before prices edged higher late in the session. Vale extended losses ahead of the reopening of China’s iron ore market, which was closed from October 1 to October 7 for the weeklong National Day holiday. Banco do Brasil (-6.4%) and B3 (-2.7%) pulled back after surging 11% and 22.6%, respectively, on Monday. Other laggards included Axia (-3.1%), WEG (-1%) and Ambev (-1.5%). In contrast, Itaú (+2%) and Bradesco (+4.4%) extended gains after rallying 10.4% and 13.6%, respectively, on Monday. Brazil’s trade surplus surged 146.4% year over year in September, above forecasts of $7.19 billion and marking the sharpest annual increase since January 2024.

Ibovespa Retreats After Election-Driven Rally

The Dow Jones Index went up by 253 points or 0.49 percent on Tuesday to close at 51521 points. The rise was led by Cisco Systems (4.45%), Walmart (2.05%) and Amazon (2.00%). On the downside, the weakerst performers were Salesforce (-2.09%), Boeing (-1.52%) and UnitedHealth (-0.75%).

The Dow Jones Index Closes 0.49% Higher

US stock indices closed higher on Tuesday with support from the heavyweight tech sector as the surge in bond yields paused and softened pressure on the sector's credit outlook. The S&P 500 added 0.6% and the Nasdaq 100 rose 0.5% each to their record highs, while the Dow gained 253 points. Both AI infrastructure and hyperscaler stocks were mostly higher as fresh deals in the sector continued to spur speculative demand for the technology. OpenAI was in talks for a $30 billion round of financing with UAE funds and Alphabet gained 0.3% ahead of an agreement to acquire nuclear energy capacity from Constellation Energy, which rose 12.2%. Meanwhile, AMD jumped 2.8% as CEO Lisa Su signaled strong chip demand in the coming years. Microsoft rose 0.8% and Amazon gained 1.9%, while Nvidia added 0.1%.
