Canada's S&P/TSX Composite index closed 0.2% lower at 33,912 on Friday, underperforming its US counterparts on pressure from energy producers and banks as markets parsed a batch of earnings reports. Crude oil prices pulled back for a second session despite the continued impasse between Iran and the US, which prolonged the blockade against tankers and vessels in the region. Canadian Natural and Suncor both dropped around 1.5%, while Imperial Oil sank 4% after its earnings. Meanwhile, heavyweight banks dropped on the pessimistic spending demand highlighted by the domestic GDP report released yesterday, with TD and RBC closing in the red. Meanwhile, Fairfax Financial slumped 7.5% after missing its earnings estimate. Similarly, Magna fell 5% on not meeting orders expectations. Also, TC Energy and Agnico Eagle Mines fell over 1% after the release of its quarterly report. Lastly, Air Canada fell after abandoning this year's guidance.

Still, their shares were muted as Iran submitted a new agreement proposal for the US, a step in the eventual resumption of oil exports from the Persian Gulf. Meanwhile, Meta halted its selloff and Oracle jumped nearly 7% as markets continued to gauge whether signals of higher AI spending are grounded on demand growth, evidenced my a mixed earnings momentum for hyperscalers. AI investment had carried the US GDP in the first quarter, per the latest data, offsetting signs of slowing private consumption. On the other hand, defensive stocks weighed and the Dow lost 0.2%.

The possibility of a fresh round of talks between the US and Iran will remain the focus for global markets as stocks, bonds, currencies, and power-hungry commodities are still moving in tandem with oil prices. The US jobs report will take the spotlight among economic data, joining the JOLTS and ADP Report in unveiling fresh insights for the labor market. Key leading indicators are also featured in the UMich consumer sentiment survey and the ISM Services PMI. China will also release industry-collected PMI data, while joining Germany in posting its trade balance. Also in Europe, the Eurozone aggregate for retail sales is awaited. Meanwhile, monetary policy decisions are due in Australia, Sweden, Norway, and Mexico. Earnings are due from Palantir, AMD, McDonald's, HSBC, Shell, Novo Nordisk, and UniCredit.
